Huang Jiulang: Homosexuality with a Fox Spirit

This article delves into the complex dynamics of relationships, challenging societal norms and discussing the controversies surrounding Huang Jiulang.

He Shi Can, with the courtesy name Zi Xiao, had his study on the east bank of Tiao Xi, with a vast wilderness outside his door. One evening, as He Shi Can happened to be outside, he saw a woman riding a donkey, followed by a young man. The woman appeared to be in her fifties, with an elegant and otherworldly charm. As for the young man, he was around fifteen or sixteen years old, exceptionally handsome, even more beautiful than a young woman.

He has always had a preference for male gender. Upon seeing the young man, his soul seemed to leave his body. He stood on tiptoe, watching them until they disappeared without a trace before returning. The next day, He Shi Can waited there again. When the sun set behind the western mountains, and the evening darkness deepened, the young man finally passed by.

He Shi Can approached with a welcoming smile, trying his best to please and asked where the young man came from. The young man replied, “I came from my grandfather’s house.” He Shi Can invited the young man to rest in his study for a while. The young man initially declined, but He Shi Can insisted and finally persuaded him to enter the room.

After sitting for a while, the young man got up to take his leave, despite He Shi Can’s attempts to keep him. He Shi Can held the young man’s hand as he saw him off and earnestly asked him to visit often. The young man nodded in agreement and then departed. From that day on, He Shi Can yearned for the young man as if he were starving and thirsty, gazing at the entrance all day without a moment’s rest.

One day, as the sun was setting halfway down the western mountains, a young man suddenly appeared. He Sheng was delighted and invited the young man into his study, where he had a servant bring some wine. He asked the young man for his name, and the young man replied, “My surname is Huang, I am the ninth in line, and I am not yet of age, so I do not have a name.” He Sheng then asked, “Why have you passed by here several times?” Jiu Lang replied, “My mother lives at my maternal grandfather’s house and often falls ill, so I come here to visit her.” After drinking a few cups of wine, Jiu Lang was about to leave. He Sheng grabbed his arm, blocked his way, and locked the door, urging him to stay. Jiu Lang had no choice but to sit down again, blushing deeply. He Sheng and Jiu Lang talked under the lamp, and Jiu Lang was gentle like a young girl. When the conversation turned to flirtation or similar topics, he blushed and turned his head to face the wall, remaining silent. After a while, He Sheng wanted to share a bed with Jiu Lang, but Jiu Lang said that he had a bad sleeping habit and did not want to sleep together. He Sheng insisted repeatedly, and Jiu Lang reluctantly took off his outer clothes and lay on the bed in his pants. He Sheng blew out the candle, and after a while, he moved closer to Jiu Lang and shared a pillow with him. He tightly embraced Jiu Lang, begging desperately for homosexual intimacy. Jiu Lang angrily said, “I associated with you because you are a cultured scholar, but your behavior is truly beastly!” After a while, as the morning star twinkled and the sky gradually brightened, Jiu Lang left on his own. He Sheng was afraid of losing contact with Jiu Lang and continued to wait by the door, pacing back and forth, eagerly anticipating his return, gazing intensely as if trying to see through the Big Dipper.

Several days later, Jiu Lang finally appeared. He Sheng welcomed him with joy, apologized for his previous recklessness, and forcibly brought him into the study. The two of them sat down together, exchanging laughter and conversation. He Sheng secretly rejoiced that Jiu Lang had not held a grudge against him for his past actions. Before long, they undressed and got into bed again. He Sheng caressed Jiu Lang, pleading for intimacy. Jiu Lang said, “Your deep affection is already engraved in my heart, but there is no need for us to engage in such acts when our love is so strong.” He Sheng used sweet words to entangle Jiu Lang, only desiring to get closer to his skin. Jiu Lang agreed. While Jiu Lang was asleep, He Sheng took advantage of him discreetly. Jiu Lang woke up from his slumber, put on his clothes hastily, and fled in the middle of the night. From that day on, He Sheng became melancholic and forlorn, reaching a point of neglecting sleep and food. He grew weaker and more emaciated with each passing day, only able to rely on his servant to inquire about Jiu Lang’s whereabouts.

One day, Jiu Lang passed by He Sheng’s door and was about to leave when the servant grabbed his clothes and led him into the study. Jiu Lang was surprised to see He Sheng looking extremely emaciated, so he went over to offer his condolences. He Sheng shared the truth with Jiu Lang, and tears rolled down his cheeks. Jiu Lang softly said, “My intention was that our love is of no benefit to me and harmful to you, so I was unwilling. But since you like it so much, what do I have to lose?” He Sheng was overjoyed to hear this.

After Jiu Lang left, He Sheng’s condition immediately improved, and after a few more days, he was completely cured. Jiu Lang indeed returned and after sharing intimate moments with He Sheng, he said, “Today, I reluctantly accepted your request, but please do not consider this a regular occurrence.” He then added, “I want to ask you for a favor, will you help me?” He Sheng asked what it was, and Jiu Lang replied, “My mother suffers from a heart ailment, and only the Elixir of Preheaven from the imperial physician Qiyewang can cure her. You have a connection with him, so you should be able to obtain it.” He Sheng agreed. Before leaving, Jiu Lang reminded him once more.

He Sheng then went into the city to seek the medicine and handed it over to Jiu Lang that night. Jiu Lang was very pleased and thanked him profusely. He Sheng wanted to engage with him again, but Jiu Lang said, “Please don’t pursue this further; I will find a beautiful woman for you, far superior to me.” He Sheng asked who it was, and Jiu Lang replied, “I have a beautiful cousin. If you’re interested, I can arrange a marriage for you.” He Sheng smiled without answering. Jiu Lang left with the medicine.

Three days later, Jiu Lang came to collect the medicine again. He Sheng wondered why he had come so late and expressed some reproach in his words. Jiu Lang said, “I couldn’t bear to bring you trouble, so I wanted to distance myself from you. Since you cannot understand my sincere intentions, I hope you won’t regret it.” From that moment on, the two of them met every night without interruption.

Every three days, Jiu Lang required medicine. Doctor Qi found it peculiar that He Sheng needed medicine so frequently and asked, “This medicine has never needed more than three doses. Why is this patient’s illness not improving?” So, he prepared three doses of medicine and handed them to He Sheng. Then he turned to He Sheng and asked, “Your complexion looks dim. Are you sick?” He Sheng replied, “There’s nothing wrong.” Doctor Qi then examined He Sheng’s pulse and was astonished, saying, “You have a ghostly pulse, and the illness is in the Shaoyin meridian. If you’re not careful, it could be dangerous.” He Sheng returned home and shared this with Jiu Lang. Jiu Lang sighed and said, “What an astute physician! In truth, I am a fox, and in the long run, I may pose a threat to you.” He Sheng suspected he was being deceived, so he hid the medicine and didn’t give it to Jiu Lang all at once, fearing that he might not return in the future.

Not long after, He Sheng indeed fell ill and sought treatment from Doctor Qi. Doctor Qi said, “You didn’t tell the truth before, and now your spirit has flown out of your body. Even a skilled physician like Qin Huan would have no way to help.” Jiu Lang came to visit and care for He Sheng every day, saying, “You should have listened to me from the beginning; it has come to this.” Shortly after, He Sheng died from his illness, and Jiu Lang wept bitterly before departing.

Initially, there was a Hanlin scholar in the county who had been a close childhood friend of He Sheng. At the age of seventeen, he became a Hanlin scholar himself. During that time, the local officials in Shaanxi were corrupt and brutal, and because they had bribed the officials of the imperial court, no one dared to expose their crimes. The Hanlin scholar submitted a memorial to reveal their wrongdoing, but instead, he was labeled as someone who exceeded his role and was dismissed from office.

Later, one of the corrupt local officials in Shaanxi became the provincial governor and constantly sought opportunities for revenge against the Hanlin scholar. The Hanlin scholar was known for his integrity from a young age and had once gained the favor of a rebel leader. The provincial governor managed to obtain old letters between the Hanlin scholar and the rebel leader from their previous interactions, which he used to threaten the Hanlin scholar. Fearing for his life, the Hanlin scholar committed suicide, and his wife also hanged herself.

However, a day later, the Hanlin scholar suddenly woke up and claimed, “I am He Zixiao.” When questioned, he spoke about matters related to the He family, and everyone realized that He Sheng had undergone a case of transmigration. Unable to keep him there, he ran to He Sheng’s house. The provincial governor remained suspicious, thinking there might be deceit involved, and was determined to frame him. He sent people to demand a thousand taels of silver from him. Although the Hanlin scholar agreed on the surface, he was deeply troubled and distressed inside.

Suddenly, someone reported that Jiu Lang had arrived, and the Hanlin scholar was delighted to talk to him, with a mix of joy and sorrow. Then, he requested to engage in an intimate relationship with him. Jiu Lang asked, “Do you have three lives?” The Hanlin scholar replied, “I truly regret living in this world; life is too burdensome, and I would rather be at peace in death.” He went on to lament his grievances. Jiu Lang, upon hearing this, became very concerned and lost in thought. After a while, he said, “Fortunately, we have reunited in the mortal world. You still haven’t married, and as for the cousin I mentioned earlier, she is intelligent, beautiful, and quite resourceful. She will surely help ease your troubles.” The Hanlin scholar wished to meet Jiu Lang’s cousin. Jiu Lang said, “That’s not difficult. Tomorrow, I will be going to pick her up to accompany my mother, and we will definitely pass by here. You can pretend to be my sworn brother, and I will pretend to be thirsty and in need of water. If you say ‘The donkey has run away,’ it will mean you agree.” After they settled the plan, Jiu Lang departed.

The next day at noon, Jiu Lang indeed followed behind a young lady as they passed in front of the Hanlin scholar’s house. The Hanlin scholar greeted Jiu Lang with respect and engaged in a lively conversation. He stole a glance at the young lady and saw that she had delicate features, was handsome, and exquisitely beautiful, resembling a celestial being. Jiu Lang expressed a desire for tea, so the Hanlin scholar invited them inside. Jiu Lang said to his cousin, “No need to be surprised, this is my sworn brother. Feel free to rest inside for a while.” They helped her down from the donkey and tied it at the door before entering the house together.

The Hanlin scholar prepared tea, and while doing so, he glanced at Jiu Lang and said, “Your previous words did not do justice to her beauty. If I could have her, I would have no regrets even if I died.” It seemed that the young lady had sensed they were talking about her, so she stood up and said in a charming tone, “Let’s leave.” The Hanlin scholar glanced out the door and said, “The donkey has run away!” Upon hearing this, Jiu Lang hurriedly ran outside.

The Hanlin scholar tried to embrace the young lady, but she blushed deeply and felt extremely embarrassed, like a captive prisoner. She cried out, “Brother Nine,” but received no response. She then said to the Hanlin scholar, “You already have a wife; why would you tarnish someone else’s reputation like this?” The Hanlin scholar claimed he did not have a wife. The young lady said, “If you can swear upon the mountains and rivers that you will never abandon me in the future, then I will obey your command.” The Hanlin scholar swore to the heavens, and the young lady no longer resisted. After their encounter, Jiu Lang returned.

The young lady scolded him in anger, but Jiu Lang explained, “This is He Zixiao, a former scholar and now a Hanlin scholar. He is an old friend of mine, someone trustworthy. Even if your mother were to hear about this, she wouldn’t blame anyone.” In the evening, the Hanlin scholar insisted the young lady stay, not allowing her to leave. Fearing her aunt’s reproach, Jiu Lang took responsibility upon himself and left alone on the donkey.

After a few days, a woman with a servant girl passed by the Hanlin scholar’s house. She was about forty years old and bore a striking resemblance to the young lady. The Hanlin scholar called for the young lady to come out and indeed, it was her mother. Surprised, the mother asked, “How did you end up here?” The young lady was too embarrassed to reply. The Hanlin scholar invited her inside and explained the situation. The mother smiled and said, “Jiu Lang is too childish. Why didn’t he discuss it further?” The young lady went into the kitchen and prepared a meal. After eating, her mother left.

The Hanlin scholar had acquired a beautiful wife and felt quite content, but his past sinful thoughts still haunted him, often revealing an anxious expression on his face. When the young lady asked him what was bothering him, the Hanlin scholar recounted the entire story in great detail. The young lady smiled and said, “This matter can be resolved by Brother Nine alone. Why should my husband worry about it?” The Hanlin scholar asked her to explain. The young lady said, “I’ve heard that the provincial governor indulges in sensual pleasures, including relationships with men, and these happen to be Brother Nine’s specialties. You can cater to his preferences, offer Brother Nine to him, and his resentment will dissipate. In doing so, you can also avenge your grudge.” The Hanlin scholar was concerned that Jiu Lang might not agree. The young lady said, “You just need to go and ask him.”

The next day, when Jiu Lang arrived, the Hanlin scholar prostrated himself and crawled to greet him. Jiu Lang was surprised and asked, “We have a longstanding friendship across two lifetimes, and I would willingly serve wherever needed, even if it meant going through fire and water. Why are you suddenly treating me like this?” The Hanlin scholar then explained the young lady’s scheme to him, and Jiu Lang appeared troubled. The young lady said, “I lost my purity to him, who facilitated it? What if he were to pass away prematurely? What would I do then?” Reluctantly, Jiu Lang had no choice but to agree.

The Hanlin scholar discussed with Jiu Lang and sent a letter to Wang, the Court Historian, who had a close relationship with him. They arranged for Jiu Lang to be sent to Wang. Wang understood his intentions and prepared a grand banquet, inviting the provincial governor to attend. Wang had Jiu Lang disguise himself as a young woman and perform the celestial dance, appearing as beautiful as a maiden. The provincial governor was captivated by Jiu Lang and eagerly begged Wang to sell Jiu Lang to him, fearing he might lose the chance. Wang deliberately remained silent, deep in thought, to pique his interest. After much hesitation, Wang finally revealed the Hanlin scholar’s plan to offer Jiu Lang to the provincial governor. Delighted, the provincial governor let go of past grievances.

Since acquiring Jiu Lang, the provincial governor never left his side, disregarding his previous concubines. Jiu Lang was treated like royalty, with opulent dining and possessions, and he was even given tens of thousands of taels of silver. Half a year later, the provincial governor fell ill. Sensing his imminent death, Jiu Lang used a carriage filled with gold, silver, and silk to request leave and returned to the Hanlin scholar’s home. Shortly after, the provincial governor passed away. Jiu Lang used the money to build a house, furnish it, and hire servants. He and his mother and his aunt’s family all lived together. When he traveled, his procession was grand and luxurious, and no one knew he was a fox.

I have written a humorous verdict, which I’ll include here:

Men and women living together, becoming husband and wife, is an important aspect of human relationships. The differences in male and female organs are the normal channels for the union of Yin and Yang. Even extramarital affairs between men and women are often criticized as promiscuous, but homosexuality is even more likely to be regarded as scandalous. A man must be physically strong for the vagina to open to it; the anus is not a natural passage, so how can it be allowed entry? Nowadays, some people willingly engage in such debauchery, indulging in vice and abandoning the right path. Before the passion ignites, a husband should arouse his wife; but to deviate from the natural order is a disgrace.

Placing the vagina in a state of disuse while pretending to be chaste is a contradiction. Even in barren lands, it can make a one-eyed general dominant. Tying the red hare at the city gates, as if ready to shoot a lance; bending the bow and setting the arrow in front of the treasury, as if preparing to breach it. Some say that a scholar once dreamed of an eel entering the buttocks, but in reality, it was an old lover who visited last night. Just as Wang Rong sold his plums, he will undoubtedly ruin the plum pit, preventing further growth.

Dressing in military attire, riding a big horse to frequently visit the dark pine forest, may offer temporary peace. However, if the tide from Huanglong Prefecture suddenly surges, how can it be resisted? The root of this evil should be cut off, and the passage for its coming and going should be sealed.
