During his tenure as the Minister of Revenue, Bi Ziyan, was assigned the role of Military Preparation Commissioner. While stationed in Taozhou and Minzhou, a regimental commander named Yang Hualin came to greet him. As the procession was moving forward with carriages, horses, and escorts, they happened to notice a person defecating by the roadside. Yang Hualin drew his bow to shoot the person, but Bi Ziyan quickly reprimanded and stopped him. Yang Hualin said, “This fellow is too disrespectful; he should be frightened a bit.” He then shouted from a distance, “You defecator! I’ll send you a hairpin made of Huiji rattan to tie up your hair!” Immediately, he shot an arrow, hitting the person’s hairpin directly. The person hurriedly fled, leaving feces and urine scattered all over.
